The 195* partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin is the highest for seventh wicket or lower on the first day of a Test match. The previous best was 186 between Jesse Ryder and Daniel Vettori against India in 2009.
Ravichandran Ashwin (India): "Always a special feeling to play in front of the home crowd. It has given me wonderful moments. Last time I got a hundred here, you were the coach Ravi bhai.

It helps because I have come back from a T20 tournament. Not giving a full monty but working on a few things. When the ball is there to be hit, go hard at it as Rishabh does.

(On pitch) It’s like a old Chennai surface with some bounce and spin. If you want to go after it, go hard at it. I love batting when there is some nice bounce and carry.

(On Jadeja) He was a real help. There was a point when I was sweating and struggling to go. He noticed that and carried me through. He was helpful in telling me that we don’t have to convert twos into threes and that helped me (laughs).

Before you bowl, you don’t want to think too much about the surface. I think there is enough in the pitch for the pacers. I feel the spinners will come into play in the later stages of the game.

Definitely. The new ball will do a bit. There will be some help for the bowlers. We have to start afresh tomorrow. There is some moisture underneath and there will be some assistance for the pacers early on."

5:01 PM IST and Local Time: STUMPS DAY 1! Fabulous recovery from Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja see India in a dominating position at 339/6 when the play on Day 1 comes to an end after only 80 overs, courtesy of some slower rate from the visitors!

Put into bat first, India lost wickets at regular intervals as Hasan Mahmud breathed fire with the new ball to rock the hosts early and reduce them to 3/34 before a 62-run fourth-wicket partnership between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant saw India rebuilding at Lunch.

Mahmud (4/58) removed Pant (39 off 52) right after the Lunch Break and kept Bangladesh on top. There was a 48-run 5th wicket stand between Jaiswal (56 off 118) and KL Rahul (16 off 52), with the former getting to his 5th Test fifty before Nahid Rana (1/80) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (1/77) dismissed them, respectively, in quick succession to push the home team in a spot of bother at 144/6. What happened afterwards was a sensational comeback from India.

The local boy Ashwin (102* off 112) was clear about his approach right from ball one and smashed the Bangladeshi bowlers left, right and centre to score a magnificent hundred, his 6th in the format and 2nd at Chepauk. He got in an able partner, with Jadeja (86* off 117) holding the other end and scoring a brilliant half-century, his 21st in the format. The duo added a record-breaking unbeaten 195-run partnership for the 7th wicket and have pushed Bangladesh onto the back foot.

India are at 339/6 in 80 overs and are looking forward to a massive total. Bangladeshi spinners were not up to the mark, as Ashwin (10 fours and 2 sixes) and Jadeja (10 fours and 2 sixes) took a liking to them to smash boundaries at regular intervals.

The second new ball is due, and it would be surprising if Bangladesh don't take it straightaway when play begins on Day 2.
