12:52am IST,
9:52pm Local Time I Sourya: After a comprehensive performance with both bat and
ball, the Sunrisers East Cape have cantered to a 44-run win over Paarl Royals
and ensured their place in the eliminator. A bonus point win this late in the
tournament over a tough side will put them in good stead in the business end.
The Sunrisers won the toss and decided to bat on a slow pitch. They ended up putting up a mammoth 208/4, almost outbatting their storied rivals.
But the home team came out all guns blazing in the chase, especially Jason Roy and Jos Buttler (64 off 45). The Englishmen creamed the white ball with power and precision and went at over 10 per over in the powerplay to keep their team in the hunt. But Roy departed soon after, putting a dent in the Royals' hope. Buttler and Miller were both there though and the game promised to go down to the wire. But clever bowling from Beyers Swanepoel (2/37), who bowled a fine spell, got him out, turning the match completely in the Sunrisers favor.
Last hope Miller also departed soon. Marco Jansen (2/34) then got a few wickets as the game began to go through the motions, with the winner already decided. In the end, the Royals ended on 164/7.
Earlier, Jansen's heroics with the willow (71 off 31, 4x4, 6x6) rescued his team from a precarious position with the team tottering at one point after some good work by Tom
Abell (46 off 25) early on. He timed and placed the ball with finesse while also using strength and his big reach to deadly effect after a surprise promotion to four. His 80-plus-run partnership Tristan Stubbs (22 off 10) ensured that the Sunrisers put up a huge, above-par total on a sticky surface.
