That brings an end to our coverage of this game. It was a real pleasure bringing you all the updates of this Test. It's time for us to take your leave. This is Akshay Bhide, signing off, on behalf of Saptak Sanyal and scorer Zeeshan Naiyer. Until next time, cheers and good bye.
Breaking News: Gus Atkinson has been rested for the ODI series against Australia. Olly Stone replaces him in the squad.
Ollie Pope accepts the trophy and raises it along with debutant Josh Hull. England win the three-match series by a 2-1 margin.
Ollie Pope (England Captain): "Disappointed not to be on the right side today. Credit to Sri Lanka for the way they bowled and Nissanka played world-class. But we weren't at our best as well.

I don't think there was complacency at all. It has been a long summer but there was no room for it. We came out hard. I feel we didn't score enough runs and that's frustrating.

It was just one of those days when things didn't quite work out. We will reflect on the day three and make the decisions on it. We want to keep bettering everyday. If we got that balance right, we have done well in the past. It's about finding it.

Credit to Gus and Chris Woakes as well. They have played six Tests in this summer. It's not easy for the fast bowlers. They have just strapped their legs and came out.

It was seaming and swinging throughout the game. We knew there was a patch outside off to the right handed batters. But with the swing and seam, we wanted to bowl fast bowlers in these conditions.

We have won 5 out of six Tests in this summer. Credit to Sri Lanka for the way they played this week and throughout this series as they pushed us all the way. Unfortunate that we can't win it here but we will learn from this.

When Stokesy will be fit, he will be back hopping to lead this side. But I loved every minute of leading this side.

It's been a fair few words against me. It was good to block that noise and score some runs. It doesn't necessarily matter too much as it wasn't on the winning cause but good to get some runs under the belt."
Dhananjaya de Silva (Sri Lanka Captain): "Well, you know, for now, there were no emotions in the change room. But happy with this win.

It is a big moment. We had a tough time in the last two weeks. To come here and get the win in these English conditions, it is a proud moment for me and the team.

To get 20 wickets, we haven't done that in the last two Tests. That's what I was talking about with my teammates.

I wanted Pathum in the team. But only 11 can play. The moment he came, he proved that he is the best opening batsman in Sri Lanka.

We have a fixed batting line-up. It's hard to bring in someone. Kamindu and others are scoring runs in the domestic circuit. Happy to see them perform here.

We have the confidence that we can certainly beat the other countries at their home after this win."
Kamindu Mendis (Player of the Series, Sri Lanka): "Actually, it's a good win. In these conditions, our team did very well. Our seamers did a great job and Pathum also today.

In these conditions, you face difficult conditions. I just tried to enjoy my time in the middle.

I just did small changes. Not big ones. Even in the first Test, I did a small change. It's not a big thing but you have are confident in your ability and enjoying your game, you will succeed.

It was challenging when the English seamers were coming around the wicket. I moved to the off-stump after the first game. It became easier for me to bat. In England, it is always a challenge to face the seamers.

I'm enjoying batting in the middle-order. If my team wants me to bat at the top, I will do it. At the end of the day, my challenge is what I do for the team, in whichever position I bat."
Player of the Series (Sri Lanka): Kamindu Mendis
Joe Root (Player of the Series, England): "Yeah, it's been a good summer. Nice to contribute as a senior player. Nice to be a part of this team which is trying to evolve every day. It's great for English cricket.

I feel good. This game is fickle. Things can change quickly. You have to keep working hard and keep training. It's great to be a part of this group.

Last few years have been the most enjoyable of my career. May the success of this team continues.

I think we came in different conditions in this game. We try to find ways to put pressure on the opposition. But we sticked to how we play. It is what brings the best of us and it's an opportunity for us to learn from it and try find ways to evolve."
Player of the Series (England): Joe Root
Pathum Nissanka (Player of the Match): "It was a great opportunity for me to play in England. I enjoyed my innings.

It was slightly difficult in the morning. But I had the positive mindset yesterday and it helped me. I tried to play my normal game."
Player of the Match: Pathum Nissanka

5:34 PM IST, 1:04 PM Local Time: That’s it. Sri Lanka maintain their 100% win record at The Oval in Tests. They beat England by 8 wickets and avoid a whitewash. This is the highest successful run chase by an Asian Team in England in Tests. The hosts will be very disappointed with their effort as they were in a very strong position at one stage but let the advantage slip. As a result, they fail to remain unbeaten in Tests in this home summer.

Here is the recap of this final Test match of the English summer. Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bowl first in overcast conditions. They failed to take advantage of the conditions though. They were rusty and it allowed the English side to score at a brisk rate. Ben Duckett (86) and Ollie Pope (154) were among the runs for the hosts.

However, the other batters faltered as they got knocked over on 325 after being in a strong position of 261/3. Milan Rathnayake picked up three scalps for Sri Lanka whereas Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Kumara and skipper Dhananjaya de Silva grabbed two apiece.

Pathum Nissanka scored a quickfire 51-ball 64 for Sri Lanka at the top of the order but the middle-order batters struggled to get going. A rescue act from Dhananjaya de Silva (69) and Kamindu Mendis (64) helped them get to 263. Debutant Josh Hull and Olly Stone grabbed three wickets apiece for England which helped them get a handy first-innings lead of 62.

With all the time in the world available, England’s batters failed to pounce on the opportunity and let the advantage slip. Daniel Lawrence (35) threw away his wicket after getting a start. Just like the first innings, the other batters faltered until Jamie Smith led the fightback. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 67 off 50 balls before the hosts got bundled out on 156 in just 34 overs.

The Lankan pacers were right on the money from ball one. Each of their four seamers entered the wickets column. Lahiru Kumara bowled an outstanding spell and registered figures of 4/21 in his seven overs. Vishwa Fernando and Asitha Fernando claimed three and two scalps respectively.

Chasing 219, Pathum Nissanka led the charge with the bat and scored a quickfire fifty after Dimuth Karunaratne (8) fell cheaply. Nissanka received good support from Kusal Mendis. Both put 69 between them before Mendis departed on 39. Angelo Mathews joined Nissanka who kept going strong and brought up a magnificent century. His second in Tests.

The English side failed to create further inroads as Nissanka and Mathews remained unbeaten on 127 and 32 respectively to guide their side across the line. Both put 111 between them which helped Sri Lanka beat England by 8 wickets and finish the tour on a high. This was Sri Lanka's only fourth win in England in the longest format and first since 2014.
Pathum Nissanka seals the victory for his side with a boundary!!!!! This is Sri Lanka's 4th victory in English soil out of 21 Test matches!
40.3 S Bashir to P Nissanka
4 FOUR!!! Pathum Nissanka finishes things in style. A famous win for Sri Lanka as they beat England comprehensively by eight wickets. Bashir bowls it quicker and flatter outside off, Nissanka waits back and cuts it hard behind square in the off side. Past backward point and it goes to the fence in a flash.
