2:05 am IST, 8:36pm (30.6.23) | Sourya: Somerset have prevailed over Surrey in an exciting, high-scoring T20 Blast clash here at the Kennington Oval by 18 runs. Chasing an imposing 209 to ensure progress, Surrey were pegged back immediately by some fine pace bowling from Craig Overton (1/26) and Kiwi quick Matt Henry (4/30). Sunil Narine was promoted to three to up the rate and he clobbered a few to keep them in the hunt and they did reach 50 at the end of the powerplay with Will Jacks finding his range as the overs progressed as well as his timing.
But they were always playing catch-up and with Ish Sodhi (3/33) getting rid of the high-flying Will Jacks (50 off 26), and Jamie Smith with consecutive deliveries, the screws had well and truly been turned on them. They were playing catch-up from that point on with the required rate creeping up all the time. Sam Curran (47 off 36) and Jamie Overton (30 off 15), clobbered some very clean sixes, but none of them stayed there long enough to get them over the line. Curran fell to Matt Henry trying to up the rate, while Overton had perished clean bowled to Ben Green.
Somerset also fielded and caught amazingly, something Surrey struggled with during their stint on the field. In the end, the home side finished on 190/9, well and truly beaten in a game of titans.
Earlier, Somerset, already in the next round, were put into bat first and were propelled by an excellent innings by their keeper Tom Banton (84 off 44), who timed as well as blasted the ball to all corners of the ground. He was ably supported by Tom Kohler-Cadmore who made 39 off 23. Meanwhile, Ben Green, who also bowled a decent spell, improvised his way to a 40 to help his side to over 200 despite some great late bowling from Chris Jordan and Sam Curran.
In the end, their total was more than enough for the victory.
