Match Details
In pursuit of what was considered a below-par total, the Zimbabwean openers Tadiwanashe Marumani and Innocent Kaia were watchful at the start by sewing up only 7 runs off the first two overs but it wasn’t long enough before Ireland drew first blood. Marumani’s scratchy innings of 5(11) was winded up by Barry McCarthy in his first over.
Captain Craig Ervine was the next man in and he got together with Kaia to chalk up 38 runs off the powerplay. The left-right duo provided the much-needed resurgence and kept on ticking boundaries at regular intervals. The 42-run partnership was broken by Harry Tector as Kaia was dismissed for a run-a-ball 23.
Following that, Zimbabwe kept losing wickets but it was the captain’s knock from Craig Ervine that still held the hopes for the home side. The southpaw secured 54(43), including 6 fours before Ben White dismissed him. Eventually, the game was evenly poised till the penultimate before Ryan Burl’s prowess secured 19 runs off that over and practically sealed the game.
Earlier in the day, after being invited to bat first, Ireland was off to a deficient start as they only managed to chalk up 39 off the powerplay by losing three top-order wickets. Ross Adair 1(3) was the first one to return, soon followed by the wickets of Andrew Balbirnie 9(11), and Stephen Doheny 2(4).
The right-hander Harry Tector then joined forces with Curtis Campher and resurrected Ireland’s innings. The duo kept rotating the strike and stitched boundaries at regular intervals. The 70-run stand between the pair was ceased by Ryan Burl as he outwitted Curtis Campher 27(28), and that was soon followed by the wicket of well-set Harry Tector, who departed for 47(38), with 3 boundaries to his credit.
Following Tector’s wicket, the Irish team crumbled like a pack of cards as they lost the next four wickets under 50 runs. George Dockrell and Mark Adair stitched 31 runs for the seventh wicket before Mark Adair departed for 14 (10), and George Dockrell followed him in the very next ball after scoring 23(17). Eventually, it was Barry McCarthy’s maximum that took the Irish scorecard past 140.
The Zimbabwean bowlers were exceptional with their change-ups and kept the batters under wraps. The off-spinner Wesley Madhevere was the pick of the bowlers for them as he claimed 2 scalps by giving away 8 runs. Similarly, Tendai Chatara, Luke Jongwe, and Ryan Burl also accounted for a couple of breakthroughs. Stick around for the post-match presentation!
