Chasing a decent total of 288, Will Young started the New Zealand innings alongside gloveman Tom Blundell, who was promoted to the opening slot today. The right-handed started on a sedate note and adjusted to the conditions before Blundell went all guns blazing and cashed in on the looseners. Young also kept the scorecard moving at a swift rate in the powerplay.
Blundell and Young propelled New Zealand to their best powerplay total (57/0) in this ODI series so far. Both the batters continued to exert pressure on the hosts and were making things simpler for New Zealand. Just when the situation was getting bleak for Pakistan, the 83-run opening partnership was broken as a consequence of a runout. Will Young was the victim and had to walk back for 33(41).Tom Blundell kept New Zealand in the hunt and registered his maiden half-century in ODI cricket. Daryl Mitchell, the next batter in, continued his blistering form in the series and took the aggressive route early on but the right-hander holed out in the deep in the process and had to depart for 21(24).
Right when Blundell and Tom Latham were retrieving the innings, another mix-up hampered New Zealand’s spirits. On this occasion, the well-set Blundell 65(78) was returned to the pavilion in dismay. Mark Chapman joined forces with Tom Latham and absorbed the pressure but the soaring asking run rate was concerning for the Blackcaps.
