Essex were in the driver’s seat throughout this test match, right from day one when their batters looked quite solid on a pitch that had some lateral movement, with the overhead conditions being overcast throughout the batting stint. They were eventually dismissed for 391 on day two, thanks to an attacking 72 from Snater, Dan Lawrence, who had to call for a runner after tweaking his right hamstring, went on to make magnificent 120 runs. There were two interruptions because of inclement weather, one in the 1st session because of with about 8 overs were lost and the entire last session got washed out without a ball being bowled.
Lancashire got off to a disastrous start, the overhead conditions were dark and gloomy and lots of movement was seen both ways, this made life extremely tough for the top order batters and the short opening resistance was ended in the 5th over with just 5 runs on the board. It was a downslide from then, none of the batters could put up any resistance, Simon Cook got the first wicket for Essex and Porter and Snater also chipped in with wickets. Some of the shots played were very poor and Apart from Dane Vilas none of the batters could even get into the double figures on Day 2. Josh Bohannon who impressed one and all in the previous encounter was sent back to the dressing room on a duck after facing 10 deliveries while Croft was out on a golden duck.
