Quaid-E-Azam Trophy | Final | Iftikhar Ahmed leads KPK to record fifth domestic title in two years

It was routine work by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the Quaid-E-Azam Trophy 2021 final as it defeated Northern and won yet another final and its record fifth domestic title in as many competitions in the last two years, becoming the first-ever side to be able to do that. The day-night Test first of its kind for a domestic or international game in Pakistan lasted for full five days as Northern were eventually all out in only the 46th over, chasing a target of 384 on the last day. There was no other option for Northern but to go for the kill as they were trailing in the game on the basis of the first inning’s lead. Sajid Khan was among the wickets for the KPK side as he took a five-wicket haul in the innings to add to his tally of four wickets from the first innings in the game. It was his five-wicket haul that actually finished the job. But it was started by his captain Iftikhar Ahmed as he broke the second wicket partnership between the triple centurion from the previous game, Mohammad Huraira and Northern skipper Umar Amin. After the end of that 78 run stand between the two, there wasn’t much resistance from others. Earlier in the game, Riding on Iftikhar’s century, KPK scored 374 runs in the first innings. The skipper was helped by a 68 from Asif Afridi and 45 from opener Ashfaq Ahmed. For Northern Apart from Huraira’s, Sarmad Bhatti’s and Haider Ali’s fifties, no other batter was able to put in much effort and as a result, they rolled over for 256 in their first innings. In their second innings, KPK were helped by fifty from experienced Fakhar Zaman at the top and a quickfire 79 from wicketkeeper batter Rehan Afridi. Courtesy of those two innings, the team from the North-West part of Pakistan managed to get to 265 and set a target of 384 for Northern to chase in the last innings. This is the fifth title for KPK in the five tournaments they have played in the last two seasons. They won the Quaid-E-Azam Trophy for the 2020 edition as well as they shared it with Central Punjab. Along with it, they won back to back National T20 titles in the year 2020 and 2021 and also won the 50-over competition, the Pakistan Cup’s 2020-21 edition. If they are able to win the 2021-22 edition of the One Day tournament, then they would become the first team to complete the triplet of winning all formats of domestic tournaments twice.

BAN vs PAK | 2nd Test: Babar Azam triggers Pakistan win with maiden Test wicket in thrilling encounter

BAN vs PAK | 2nd Test: Babar Azam triggers Pakistan win with maiden Test wicket in thrilling encounter

Yes, you read the headline right, Babar Azam did trigger Pakistan win with the ball as he broke the game-changing partnership between Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, which was the last hope Bangladesh were clinging on to save the game. Babar introduced himself in the 76th over with Bangladesh comfortably placed at 198-6 and the partnership between Miraz and Shakib going past 50 runs and most importantly taking up 139 deliveries for it. With only 14 more overs to be played, which would have been reduced to 11 or 12 given the way the light was deteriorating. The off-spin from the Pakistan captain however did the trick as it made Miraz lose his concentration and he was trapped plumb in front of the wicket on the second ball of the over. Although the on-field umpire gave it not out, Babar reviews and the decision was reversed. This was the opening Pakistan needed and they got through the part-time off-spin of their skipper. As they say one brings two and it id. In the very next over, Shakib, who had by then faced 130 balls, lost his concentration too and was bowled by Sajid Khan to give him his ninth wicket of the game. From there on it was formalities only as Pakistan needed to get just two wickets and tailenders were only left. However, Taijul Islam decided to fight and stretched the match from the 76th over till the 85th over by losing just one wicket. And just when it seemed that light might be offered to Bangladesh if they could play just one over, Sajid struck again and Taijul’s 31 ball struggle came to an end. Earlier in the day, Bangladesh, starting from their overnight score of 76-7 were bundled out in the first session itself for a meagre 87. They were asked to follow on and lost their four wickets for only 25 runs before Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim took up the fight. After Rahim and Das’ dismissal, both of which were due to the batter’s own fault as Das hit a dolly straight to the fielder and Rahim’s bat was lifted instead of being ground in the case as he was run out, Shakib and Mehidy picks up the fight and gave hope that the Test could be saved. Among Shakib, Rahim, Liton and Mehidy, the four players played almost 70 overs while the remaining seven batters could hardly play 15 overs. Credit must also go to Pakistan for the way they managed to win a Test match which if seen in totality had only eight sessions of proper play. This victory by an innings and eight runs brightens its prospects in the World Test Championship 2021-23 points table. Pakistan are currently in the second position with three wins from four games while Sri Lanka is at the top with a 100% score, winning two in two.

BAN vs PAK | 2nd Test: Sajid Khan rattles hosts, put them on brink with eight-wicket haul

Bangladesh are struggling to save the second Test of the series against Pakistan despite a major portion of the first three days being washed out due to persistent rains. They could bat only 32 overs on the fourth and early part of the fifth day of the Test to be dismissed for a mere 87 runs and leaving themselves to follow on. Pakistan had declared their first innings at 300/4 and then unleashed their bowling attack on the home batsmen. Sajid Khan demolished the batting order and picked six wickets on the fourth day and extended it to a weight-wicket haul on the final day to put Bangladesh on the mat. The hosts did not find it easy even on the second opportunity to bat and save themselves from a big defeat as the Pakistan new ball pair of Hasan Ali and Shaheen Shah Afridi struck thrice to leave them on the brink.

BAN vs PAK | 2nd Test: Sajid Khan’s maiden five-wicket haul gives Pakistan a whiff of victory

Sajid Khan, the off-spinner from Pakistan made headlines for the first time in his small Test career as his first five-wicket haul has pushed Pakistan in a direction where they can now think of even getting a win. The second Test going on at the Sher-E-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka took a critical turn on day four as Pakistan declared their innings after adding 119 runs to their overnight score from day three. Batting for the first time in the game, Bangladesh batters didn’t try to stay at the wicket and played shots that weren’t worth playing on the slow damp pitch. Courtesy of some very average shot selection Sajid khan managed to pick six wickets while Bangladeshi skipper Mominul Haque was run out to leave the hosts reeling at 75-7 at the end of the fourth day. If full 90 overs are bowled on day five, which though looks uncertain given the weather in Dhaka, Pakistan might just want to go full throttle and take all 13 wickets on the last day to add a crucial win to their tally which would help them in the World Test Championship 2021-23 Points Table, where they are currently sitting at the second position behind Sri Lanka. Najmul Hossain Shnato top-scored for Bangladesh with 30 off 50 balls while Shakib Al Hasan, the only other player to reach double figures is unbeaten on 25 off 32 balls. Taijul Islam is batting alongside Shakib.

BAN vs PAK | 2nd Test: Bangladesh reel at 25-4 as Sajid cleans up top order

BAN vs PAK | 2nd Test: Bangladesh reel at 25-4 as Sajid cleans up top order

The second Test match between Bangladesh and Pakistan has been in the limelight mainly because of the persistent rain which had not allowed the play to go on for a larger period of time. However, on day four, things changed drastically as Pakistan declared their innings at 300-4 and invited Bangladesh to play crucial 10 overs before Tea. The declaration did the trick as Sajid Kahan made use of the turning wicket and removed the two Bangladesh openers in Shadman Islam and debutant Mahmudul Hasan Joy. While Islam made three runs, Joy would now have to carry the burden of being out on a duck in his debut international innings. Skipper Mominul Haque who failed in both innings of the first Test continued to dwell in bad form as he was run out two just before Tea. Just at the time of writing this copy, the Tigers lost their oldest warhorse in Mushfiqur Rahim who literally threw his wicket away. Rahim tried to go for an extravagant slog sweep and handed a simple above head catch to Fawad Alam at mid-wicket. In only 14 overs, Bangladesh are now 42-4 with Najmul Hussain Shanto and last match hero Liton Das at the crease. Earlier in the day, both Babar Azam and Azhar Ali, the overnight batters were removed by Khaled Ahmed and Ebadot Hussain respectively. But Fawad Alam and Mohammad Rizwan, the two men that joined afterwards made sure that runs flew swiftly and took Pakistan to 300, picking their respective fifties on the way while remaining unbeaten.
